  • Knowing your tools and materials including health/safety
  • Drawing line, shapes, angles, measuring proportions and using tools to do so.
  • Light and shadow and its use to create form.
  • Using oil paint, media, brush work
  • Understanding colour, tonal values, saturation and how to mix colours.
  • Learn how to mix colour by comparing to real life colours using a limited palette.
  • Indirect and Direct painting methods
  • Elements of Landscape painting

Subject matter will be varied, we will use still life, portrait and landscape. The varied subject matter will provide a varied view of how to use oil paint to depict various subjects and create the illusion of light and form.

Class structure

The aim of this class is to teach you to paint using oils and various methods for the application of paint used by the old masters as well as later impressionists and contemporary painters.

The style of painting is realism and so you will need to learn how to paint objects from life and as they look in the real world. After you learn the basic principles you are then free to develop your own style of realism and painting.

Although this is a group class however, each person will work to develop the skill at own pace. It is an incremental way of developing a skill and you will be introduced to a harder technique only if you master the previous one.

Classes can be cancelled if numbers are not reached. In case class is cancelled the deposit will either be refunded or transferred to other sessions. The fee is for 6 sessions. If you miss a class (maximum 1 class), you will not loose the money but it will be deducted from the fee of the next term.

MATERIALS NEEDED

For the first session I will provide to you with all the materials that you need. We will then discuss your objectives and needs and I will be able to give you an informed feedback about what you will need to buy. I always suggest that if you want to progress in this skill you will also need to do a lot of practice on your own.

Chris Vidal is a contemporary realist artist living in Sydney, Australia. His interest in the arts started at a very young age. He studied classical drawing at the School of Arts in Malta and then pursued a career as a medical scientist and researcher. His passion for the arts, though, persisted. He taught himself how to paint in oil because he was interested in oil painting. He eventually gave up his longtime job to pursue a career as a professional artist. His most recent paintings are a variety of still life and travel-inspired depictions of the Australian landscape. Realist and impressionist masters as well as modern painters have an effect on his work. He creates a constant flow of new works and commissioned paintings, from his home studio in Sydney. His works were published in books and magazines and are found in private and corporate collections in Australia and Internationally. Chris is a professional painter who is passionate about teaching people about painting. He has been instructing students in drawing and painting for the past eight years in several Sydney locales. He places equal emphasis on explaining the technique and the rationale behind how it is carried out. Understanding the reasons behind things enables the student to reason and make choices, two skills necessary for working independently.
